They weren't that good last year either. Look at their schedule from last year then look at the fact that Ohio State beat them. Then Ohio State lost to Florida 41 - 14(DEMOLISHED). Then to top it all off they lost to USC in the bowl game, the same USC that lost to an unranked team. Where is the surprise?

Adding to what others have said.... another reason its so big is that just 4 games ago they were playing for chance to go to the national title game!

Michigan is a I-A team, meaning they get most of the top recruits, the best of the best. I-AA gets players that aren't usually good enough to play for I-A schools.

OSU and Florida were both I-A schools and both had great records as I-A teams. I-AA teams have HORRIBLE records against I-A teams...just so happens that the best I-AA team, Appalachian State, is good enough to beat I-A teams.

It's like a NCAA Football team beating an NFL team...it's that kind of rare...it should never happen than I-A loses to I-AA...there is a point they are in separate sections.

Its only a suprise to people who actually know about football. The ones who use sports mathmetics tend to not be suprised by these things. Under sports mathematics because USC lost to an unranked team, they had no reason to even be in a bowl game.

It is such a big deal because it has NEVER happened until last week. a div II team has never, ever, beaten a ranked division I team. So then michigan loses to app state and history is made, then they get spanked again in their own crib by oregon.....lloyd carr will be history after this season.
