Windows 95? That means your laptop is about 10 years old. I'm sorry, it's not able to run Windows XP. If you are very lucky, you could ungrade it to Windows 98se.

Two points
First: Is your laptop BIOS set to boot from CD?
Second: You will probably not be able to install XP as a Laptop that was originally built with win 95 will not be powerful enough to run XP and the install will fail. Even if it does install it will be extremely slow
As a rule of thumb each new version of windows requires twice the processing power of the previous version to perform the same.

You should be able to at least see the contents of the disk in explorer. If you can't then the answer about it being a DVD is probably correct.

If you want to get a better OS on that laptop then your only option will be Linux

Could you be more specific about what happens when you try to boot from the XP disc? Is there an error or does it simply fail to start?

If it simply won't boot from the XP disc it could simply be because your laptop isn't configured to boot from the CD instead of the hard drive.

Your laptop is a bit long in the tooth and will not meet the hardware requirements necessary to run XP.

XP won't run on older machines and needs 512 mgs of ram to run properly. Windows 95 is way to old for XP. You might try upgrading to windows 98SE (which was a decent OS).

I downloaded the XP version from a website, and didn't need
to buy a CD for that. A friend of mine bought the CD and used
that, since she didn't know she could download it for free. I
believe I went to the website for Windows products and got
it from there. I'm sure you could also, if I could. Then you could
take your CD back for a refund, maybe?

The XP CD is probably a DVD disc. Your computer probably doesnt have a DVD drive.

Go into your Bios setup and select your boot up sequence for CD-Rom first....save and exit. Cd will start the boot sequence.

Good Luck
