You can live the helmet at home and face the snooter and
end up in the hospital dead. Unless you want to see many
seriously injured players, go ahead. These days the bowling
speeds and body line can be more dangerous, even though
back old days too, we had many bowlers bowling similar
speeds. But no one wants to take much risk.
Helmets are must for close in fielders.
they will get injured when the bowler hits him .yyesterday i saw the ball has hitten ganguly on his helmet by james anderson.if he did not wear helmet it would his forehead and he would be injured

No , unless cricketers switch over to playing with softer balls like Tennis balls .Or bouncer is altogether banned.
But even If bouncers are banned,an odd ball still might bounce and hit a Batsman's head.
While cricketers started using Helmets only after late 70's , moving back to that era is very difficult and also unjustifiable.

I once seen an INDIAN CRICKET player play an odi without a helmet. I forgot who though.

nope............out of question.discard helmet and the players face dire consequences...every match wit a bouncer we'll see an'' egg'' on the head of a bats man
