I was just wondering- this is my eldest niece's name, and I've noticed that lately people have begun pronouncing it "Ci-un" whereas it should be pronounced "Shy-on".

How did you think to pronounce it when you first saw it?

Mike: I agree completely- I love traditional names, and I named my daughter Elizabeth.

Sian is my sister-in-law Hanna's daughter, not mine.

I thought it was "sigh on" or "sigh ann"
I don't see where she gets the SH sound from.

Glad to see your child has a traditional name -- very little problem with pronunciation that way.

Actually, I've never heard it pronounced either of those ways -- but then we have a fairly large Welsh/Irish/Scottish community, so most are familiar with the name and know how to pronounce it correctly. Basically, Sian is the Welsh form of Jane, and is said "Shan" -- like Shane, but with a short a sound (as in Ann). Both "Ci-un" and "Shy-on" are incorrect ... but yes, I would have pronounced it properly. ;)

And Sian is a traditional, correctly-spelled name. The Si- beginning blend automatically makes the SH sound (not a SEE, SIE or SHY sound). Just like the Welsh Siarl (SHARL), Irish Siobhan (shi-VAWN) or even the masculine form here, Sion (SHON). Just wanted to clarify, based on some of the above posts. Certainly, someone can *think* they've made it up or something and use "see-on" or something for their son, but that doesn't make it correct, or even the norm. LOL

I've never known a girl to be named Sian but I know two boys named Sian and they both pronounce it "Shee-on" With the "o" slightly silent, just barley pronouncing it.

I thought the accepted pronunciation was Sharn. Every Sian I've known that's how it's pronounced.

I would have pronounced it like the word Seen. I am from Oklahoma though and we don't pronounce things right here.
