He was the teacher of Plato, who (along with HIS student, Aristotle) was the founder of Western Philosophy. In "The Dialogues," Plato uses a question and answer format to show how Socrates encouraged his students to think for themselves (instead of merely to recite someone else's words). This became known as the "Socratic Method," and is still used today.

He also left behind a tantalzingly humble legacy. When told by the Oracle at Delphi that he was the wisest of all the Greeks, he replied, "If I am the wisest, it is because I alone know that I know nothing." Socratic irony at its best.

Socrates is generally considered the first major philosopher of Western civilization. It is primarily through him that the West has gotten the idea of what philosophy is.

we don't know for certain weither he actually existed or Plato thought him up.
