No one knows the answer to this question. It was a caveman or woman who first found it. Gold is one of the nine or so elements that were known to the ancient peoples. The list of these is: Gold, Silver, Copper, Tin, Lead, Mercury, Iron, Sulfur, and Carbon. Some authorities add Platinum and Palladium, although the ancients thought these were Silver, along with real Silver, of course. Therefore, the discovery of any of these is lost in the abyss of ancient history.

The element gold was known to many ancient civilizations. There is evidence that the Egyptians were well acquainted with it as early as 3000 B.C.
In other words, it's discovery is pre-historic.
Of you choose an element other than precious metals or the first 36 elements, you are sure to be able to find some historical data.

The other answerers are correct. What you need is to go to a library and get a book called "Discovery of the Elements," Mary Elvira Weeks. That will tell you as much as is known about gold in historical/prehistoric times.

We don't know the name of a specific person who discovered gold. People have used gold since ancient times -it was probably discovered before people kept written records. Add the story about Archimedes and the king's crown to your report. It's a great story that involves gold.

to tell you the truth no one actually knows because since late BC people have been using gold for so many things that not one person can really put rights as to who first discovered gold but if it helps it was claimed to be first used or discovered around 2600 BC by the Egyptians according to the wikipedia
