I mean those able to serve. Isn't it our duty as citizens? And please don't post a bunch of fluff about "freedom" and "voluntary". We already have alot of freedom restrictions; military service would not lead us to anything fascist or totalitarian. Think before you type.

well... it's just what we decided as a nation...

most people don't think we need that many soldiers and to spend that much on defense... takes a lot of money to support that many soldiers...

we have a draft... to do so if it's needed...

In many countries such as Switzerland this is the rule, but in America the law was repealed because it was very unpopular.Unfortunately we are a world power. There are those among us who would have us run the world. This would be a job we would be unqualified to do, because the other people in the world do not have a seat in our Congress and do not help elect our President. Their language and customs are different. If we had compulsory military service, we would be emboldened to take on more foreign adventures than we have now.

It was decided that it would better serve our country to have a volunteer military. It makes little sense to force people into military service. If that man or woman does not want to be there, he or she is a liability to others.

We have to pay taxes to support the government that defends us, builds our roads, and enforces our laws. The cost to taxpayers to pay, train, arm and care for the number of people if service were mandatory would be unthinkable. Plus it would be unconstitutional to force someone to join the military. While you could argue that taxes are unconstitutional, but we all have to pay for the government we use. We have more than plenty of people willing to volunteer for military service anyway.

The idea of war as a workable solution to conflict is becoming obsolete. The winds of change are blowing and I believe that the sensibilities of the last two centuries are beginning to evolve toward finding more peaceful, constructive methods of resolving conflicts.
The harsh reality is that our weapons are growing more powerful that our ability to wield them responsibly or wisely. If we can't find a way to unite the people of this world, then the human race will go the way of the dodo, only by our own hand.

In many countries there is involuntary service. We presently don't need it, and since our country was founded on the idea of individual liberty, we should try and keep military service voluntary for as long as possible.

So in a nutshell, we aren't hurting for soldiers, therefore there aren't enough good reasons to implement involuntary military service.

I have paid taxes for over 50 years. Serving in the military was not an option when I raised my children. My spouse was in Coast Guard. Also, 3 sons were in the Navy. How much should one family sacrifice?

If and only if we don't go to war. Keep all conscripts home. The point? Reduce crime and possibly increase education. That's if everybody has to go to the military. Does working Lockheed Martin or Boeing count? I'm a pacifist though.

The reason our military works as well as it does, is because everyone involved wants to be involved.
