I think what you're referring to is Peridontal disease or Periodontitis. Here is an excellent article telling about the disease causes, prevention & cures: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periodontal_disease Note that tobacco use and refined sweeteners will make it worse.
To firm up your gums, use 5 to 10 drops of Myrrh tincture in a glass of water as a mouthwash, every time you brush.
Comfrey leaves, made into a tea and used as a mouthwash will cause regrowth of bone.
Chew on sticks of Marshmallow root, Peelu or Dogwood to inhibit plaque growth.
Mix 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and sip throughout the day. (Do not eat or drink anything acidic without diluting it. Never suck on a lemon or a lime.)Drink Alfalfa tea often, for remineralization. Supplement with 1000 mg of vitamin C daily. Eat whatever raw foods you can chew: thin apple slices, salads, tomatoes, thin radishes, lots of greens.
I'm sure your dentist has already told you what s/he and the hygenist can do. First get the thorough cleaning/scraping only they can do. You can help by using only the softest toothbrush Oral B makes. If you use gum or mints, get some that have only Xylitol for a sweetener, as it kills bacteria and actually PREVENTS cavities. Spry & Xylichew are two brands I know of. (Not the Trident variety because it has other sweeteners also.)
Get a natural toothpaste that has propolyis & myrrh in it. Tom's of Maine is one that makes such a product.
I don't usually recommend flouride at all but in the case of peridontal disease it may save your teeth. In the U.S. there is now an over-the-counter rinse called ACT that is very effective. Just be extremely cautious to not swallow any of it and use only according to the label.

If it is periodontitis, it is inflammation of the tissues surrounding the tooth or teeth. The condition can progress rapidly in some cases, slowly in others, but the final outcome of neglect is loss of tooth or teeth.
Good dental hygeine is paramount, hydrogen peroxide rinses will help clean out much debris, but you may need antibiotic treatment. Think long and hard before leaving the treatment of this condition to herbal remedies. Your dentist should be the one advising you on this.

Go and get a really good teeth cleaning by a dental hygenist. Hopefully they will irrigate your gums, too, with a solution that helps kill the anarobic bacteria that causes peridontal disease. good luck

Glutathione will increase the immune system which will solve various problems like peridentitis. But, be careful on the supplements you buy because most GSH supplements are destroyed by the stomach acid and do not enter the cells properly.
