Okay,
I am thinking about getting a guinea pig. Has anyone gotten one from petsmart? Do you think it would be better to get one from a breeder? I want a guinea pig that wont die the next day. I heard the Petsmarts' animals are mean because of being out in public and kids tapping on the cages. Which one do you think would be better?

Also, what is a cute name for one? I was think bruce for a guy.

Check with Animal Regulation or the Humane Society in your area. We had an adorable guinea pig when our daughters were young: One of the guinea pigs at school had a litter. Because we got him young, he was very outgoing, friendly and tame. They make nice pets. You have to clean their cages daily, and make sure they have fresh water and food every day. That, plus gentle daily handling, make for a wonderful friendship.

Get a book on care and feeding of a guinea pig before you acquire your pet, so that you will know what he will like, and what to feed him.

Good luck!

It's almost always better to get an animal from a breeder. I once worked at Petsmart, all there animals are from a large farm that just pumps animals out. You'd be surprised how many animals come into Petsmart ill. If you go to a breeder, you'll most likely get a much better health grantee, and you'll always have someone to answer your questions.

However, please don't pass up the option of adoption! Hundreds of pigs are just sitting in shelters because their kids grew tired of them.

*laughs* cagoldengirl had obviously never seen the "sick" and "new arrival" rooms in the back of Petsmart.

when getting any animal a breeder is best as they know the temperment of the parents and hopefully further back.
if you get a guinea pig from a pet store make sure it's young and also be prepared for babies as many don't know how to sex correctly.
I have had some that were bought as males and then had babies. Teh pet store insist it wasn't the one I got fromtehm but then some magic happened or whatever.

Many people think that petsmart and some other pet store mistreat their animals and/or do not take good enough care of them. i am highly against this way of thinking. i have bought plenty of animals from them and go in quite regularly to play with the other animals. Though some of the animals there may seem mean. It can be different from animal to animal. Some are from bad shipments and some are just not as friendly as others. Petsmart takes very good care of their animals because most people that work at pet stores love animals just as much as you would. i recomend the pet store over a breeder.

Petsmart is FINE! I got a hamster from them a few weeks ago, and she is doing great!! All petsmart animals are checked by a vet, and given all shots before put up for adoptiom, so no worries! Chances are your guinea pig fro pestmart will do great!! Bruce is an ADORABLE name!

Purchase a pig from a reputable breeder! They will be well handled, genetically superior to the petshop pigs. The breeder will be able to help you with advice on dietary requirements, temperament, grooming ect - they will also tell you when the pig's birthday is.

Kayley, please read about guinea pigs before you get one. "Mean" guinea pigs haven't been handled enough by people they are familiar with. Once you get your own, you must pick him up gently and let him get to know your smell and touch EVERY DAY. If you don't, he will always be afraid of you and try to nip.

Get a guinea pig from a shelter.....DON'T BUY ONE FROM A STORE OR A BREEDER.

I would get one fro Petsmart because they are used to being around people as a breeder might keep them in a dark room and would be afraid of people and it is a really hard habit for them to break out of.
