No, I think that each of the two major parties are becoming more dependent on the other to define what they're about. Whatever the republicans stand for, the democrats stand for the opposite. The only real issue in these campaigns is who gets the money. All the other manufactured "issues" seem to be only so much menus ha .
As Star Trek's Scotty once said, "The more complicated the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain."
Think about that for a while.

At election times, the electorate consists of a right, left, and a middle. Whoever captures the middle, the swing vote, wins the election. So both parties play down their extreme positions.
