The green dot means that player has an electronic headset in thier helmet. By rule, only one helmet (on each team) with headset is allowed on the field at a time. So the green dot is to make sure there is only one headset helmet on the field at a time.

The green dot means that there's a radio in the helmet to communicate with the sidelines. Only one player on the field per team is allowed to have it, therefore the green dot signifies to the officials who that player is.

that is to tell the refs that this player had a direct link system. only one player on offense can have a head set to the sidelines. this is a new thing this year. if you see two, thats a "no no". only one on the feild at once, and only for the offence.
