I had a desktop hooked directly to DSL.... I am moving the Desktop computer to another room that doesnt have a phone jack.

Can I have the DSL hooked to a router in the original room and then have the Desktop computer running wireless DSL in the other room.

In other words, when I hook the DSL into the router, does it have to be hooked into another computer in the same room?

No, all your computers can be far from your router. If you ever want to reset up your router, you might need to move a computer near it temporarily for the setup.

You can have a Wireless Router plugged into your DSL Modem and NOT have a computer plugged (cat5) into either. You will have to have a PC plugged into them to set up the wireless router for encryption then you can move the PC to the other room.

Telephone line >> DSL Modem >(cat5)> Wireless router >>>Wireless connection to your PCs.

No, it doesn't. When you first set the wireless router up, though, you want the pc there to set up the wireless security portion of the router. Once set up, you can then move it to the other room, and from then on you can use it wirelessly, and log into the router wirelessly if you need to change any settings.

Yes you can

No it doesn't

Just be sure to lock down the router from outside access.

No. But you SHOULD use a wired connection to change configurations or apply firmware updates.
