The cost adders for the services we actually are getting is unfairly high. I understand the local cable service does transmit Local channel H.D.

Some local cable service providers DO transmit certain channels in HD---and the picture clarity and resonance is whiz-bang cool!!!

I'd shop around: doing so tends to put the price jacking mongers on alert---because somebody can offer a better package at a far lower price. And consumers ALWAYS are drawn to getting the same for a lower price.

Contact your local cable service provider: they may offer just that---HD at a lesser monthly rate.

Try satellite.

According to www.antennaweb.org in your area you can get NBC and CBS in HD using an of-the -air antenna, but you need a pretty strong antenna with pre-amp. This would be free.
