"Satan" and "Lucifer" are two completely different characters from theology.
Satan means "advesary". Originally Satan was just a minor character in Hebrew scriptures. He shows up in the story of Job, who carries out God's orders to make life miserable for Job. But then over they ears, due mainly to Christianity's influence from Zoroastrianism, the "God/Satan" duality got more and more pronounced, to the point where he's just used now in western religions as the ultimate scapegoat for people's problems.
There are lots of other antagonists or other scary characters in the Bible (the serpent in the Garden of Eden, Beelzebul, the devil, The Beast, The Dragon, etc.) but absolutely NO indication in the Bible that these are all supposed to be one in the same. None.

Lucifer is a fallen angel, he was God's most beautiful angel, but his pride and jealousy got the best of him. He wanted to be God, and he rebelled against God, convincing 1/3 of the other angels to rebel also. They were thrown out of heaven, and now rule the earth. This is the reason God created Hell as punishment for Satan and his demons, all those who worship Satan will take part in his hell. But be not deceived, because if you are not for God you are against God, therefore if you do not worship God you are worshiping Satan.
He has been called many names, {Lucifer, Satan, Devil, The Father of Lies, and The Deceiver.} There are others names as well.

Satan comes from the Hebrew word shatan which means adversary. He is supposedly the adversary to God.

Satan is the Adversary. He is the ****-stirrer, the one who challenges authority. People fear his name and image because the church is the "authority", and portrays itself as good. Therefore, Satan becomes the adversary of "good".
