There are a variety of differing mythologies about vampires.

The term is thought to originate from Slavic speaking countries like Bulgaria, Poland, Slovakia and such. Mythologies really started around the 1700s around Eastern Europe.

Common traits of the vampire include pale skin, pointed teeth, a taste for human blood and a penchant for dark clothing/cloaks. They are also renowned for turning into bats, having no reflection and, sometimes, casting no shadow. Finally, vampires are not capable of entering a premises without the permission of the owner, and cannot enter churches under any circumstance.

Vampires are averse to garlic, Christian crosses(sometimes any religious mark), holy water, fire, sunlight, the wild rose and the hawthorn plant. Items that repel vampires are known as 'Apotropaics'.

To kill a vampire, they must be stabbed through the heart with a wooden stake, exposed to direct sunlight, incinerated with fire or decapitated. To keep a vampire from resurrecting, they must be buried upside-down or their tendons severed at the knee.

Some interesting vampire myths:
- If you put a great number of small objects in their path, they MUST count them all before moving on
- South Americans believe that Aloe Vera also scares away vampires, if hung a certain way.
- Male vampires have the magical power to seduce young ladies. Not a bad power, eh?

Hope this helped.

I'm not going to write you a book, so here is just some of what I know.

There are basically three different types of vampyres (correct spelling); The original vampyres, vampyres turned into vampyres by vampyres, and vampyres turned into vampyres through a curse or a spell.

The original vampyres are xenomorphs and can alter their body to take on the shape of many animals and people. They can even make it seem as though they are mist like at times. They can exist in sunlight but their abilities are severely weakened if they do go out during the day. They are unable to transverse running water (a limitation extended on them in the Book of Pacts), so they turn some people into lesser vampyres to do their bidding, since those vampyres can cross over running water.

Vampyres turned into vampyres by vampyres cannot venture into daylight. They can alter their shape into some flying animals such as bats and ravens, and into wolfs.

Vampyres turned into vampyres through a curse or a spell are limited by the curse or spell, so their abilities and weaknesses depend on it.

All are basically immortal. All have different weaknesses and things which can destroy them (you can't kill a vampyre, only destroy it), but all three have some commonalities. Silver will poison (not destroy) all of them, and the two ways you can destroy all of them is by plunging a piece of wood from an oak tree into their heart (thus destroying the heart), or by severing the head from the body, then separating the two and burning them to ash separately, then spreading the ash separately.

Additional: That garlic as a weakness is wrong. It's actually the flower which belongs to a plant that is of the garlic family. And it only works against the second type of vampyres and sometimes those cursed or had a spell cast on them. The same with crosses and other religious icons.

The OCD is wrong as well, although vampyres tend to be unstable mentally. When they morph into something else, then they do so on a cellular level and it is done rapidly. So they don't just have the outer appearance of a person or thing, they actually become them/it (while still retaining part of their own specific makeup). This rapid and extreme change affects their mind.

Them being able to change like that, though, is what lends itself to their rapid regeneration from bodily harm, and why they are nearly immortal.

It really depends on the region and time period from which you take your lore. Certain garlic producing regions of Europe bore the cliche that vampires hate garlic - it made the people (who truly believed in vampires) feel safe for they where in a garlic rich environment.

There are the many tales of vampires and their chronic OCD (Obsessive Disorder), example, in most all of the eastern European block, for several centuries it was believed that vampires had to count everything. The best way to escape from a vampire was to throw a large amount of salt on the ground - they would be forced to stop and count every grain. This was in Dracula 2000 or one of the sequels.

Another example of their OCD is the old legend that said the best way to keep a vampire out of your home (this one comes from the so-called "gypsies") is to hang many long silken strands outside your door, tied into hundreds of knots. The theory here is that the vampire will have to stop and untie every single knot and most likely be kept there until the sunrises and it dies.

Though the sunlight killing vampires is also not a guaranteed kill in all circles. The main source of connection for this myth is just the simple and primal human fear of the dark.

The basics though, feeding on blood (though many vampires throughout history fed on other things such as horse dung, human skin flakes and babies breath - not the flower!) do stand and are pretty well portrayed by Hollywood.

The aversion to crosses, depends on the Vampiric Origin Story you choose to believe. The most common, in recent years anyway, was covered in Dracula 2000 and is that Judas Iscariot was the first vampire - turned as his punishment for betraying the Christ. These vampires would positively despise sunlight, crosses and silver and would possess very little power.

Anything else you wish to know, feel free to ask!

The vampires I know are into the whole pop culture thing and are big fans of Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears. They shop for clothes at Hot Topic and drink Vitamin water.

well if it's for a story....can't add much to the well informed opinons that have gone before, except to say, haven't vampire's been done to death? In a literary way of course. Mebbe you should consider another subject, werewolves for example have been much maligned in contemporary fiction, if you could mix the best of wolves with the best of humans, you might end up with a superhero to rival the best, just a thought.......

They don't like daylight, or garlic or crosses.

They sleep in the day.

They drink blood, but they dont nessesery have to kill the victim.

They dont have reflections.

Kids cant be vampire till like 16?
Or something.

They can travel long distances in a couple of minutes.

Normal people can become vampires by blood exchange with a vampire.
Like if he get bitten.

They aren't clean, kinda dirty.

Can't have children.

Well, that depends on what kind of vampire story you're writing. You can make them anyway you like them. I've read books where some vampires can deal with garlic and other books where they can't. Personally, I prefer the Anne Rice type of vampire, so read some of her books if you get a chance.

It's your story so make it all up from scratch. If something contradicts the stereotype of a vampire, then have a character or something state that your vampire(s) aren't like the "hollywood versions." But at least have them suck blood, lol.

They like blood, darkness, and fellow vampires. They become vampires by drinking the blood of a vampire. They dislike garlic, stakes, crosses, and sunlight.
