Ok ok, i've just been watching the BBC proms (its the last night) and am humming away to Rule Britannia.

It gets me every time! As a student,I attended two `last nights`, I remember sitting on a friends` shoulders, wearing a silly hat and waving the union flag in one hand and St. Georges` in the other. Singing and cheering and thinking how lucky I was to be alive and to live at such a great time in our history, and to have such fantastic music and muscians to play it for me, and for the whole world to hear.I still feel the same.
Rule Britannia!

"Does anyone else think Patriotism is stupid?" Yes, there are other people out there who share your sentiments. However, consensus only means that you are in agreement, not that you are right. "I mean you country is ONLY a country, it's ONLY a bit of land." Wrong. It's about much more than that. It's about the ideas and principles that this nation was founded on. It's about all the good that this country has been able to do over the years. Yes, yes, I know. America is not perfect, but no country is. This point is that as a nation, we strive to better ourselves as individuals and as a nation and you might not agree, but that is something to be proud of. "They go through life saying they are "proud" to be British, or American, or Chinese, quite convinced that their country is the best on earth." Just because someone is proud of their country, it doesn't also mean they think it is better than all other countries. For example, if you paint a picture that is beautiful, you can be proud of your creation, but that doesn't mean you think it is better than all other pictures ever painted. "But you didn't choose where you are from: being proud of it marks you out as an imbecile." Wrong. We might not have any choice in where we are born, but we do choose where we are from. Do you think all the immigrants that come to this country just accidentally showed up here? What about the people who move and become citizens of other nations? These people have chosen where they are from, just as you do when you decide to stay a citizen of this country. "It's ridiculous to let yourself be controlled by geography." Yes it is and I don't know anyone that does that. I am sure that some exist, but they are not the majority. "If your parents had moved to China shortly before you were born, and your Mother gave birth there and that's where you spent all of your life, you would be patriotic about China, not wherever else you may be from." From what I know of China and it's problems when it comes to human rights, I would have to say that I would not be patriotic about China. In conclusion: Patriotism is about pride and having pride in your country goes along way towards ensuring unity in our society. Therefore it is not stupid.

Well, with the anniversary of September 11th coming up again, I do feel a sense of patriotism towards my country stronger then most other times of the year. This is the first Tuesday, September 11th since the actual tragedy.

P.S. I'm American. I don't know how many other answerers are, so I thought I would just say I'm not British (considering how many answers seem to be from British people).

Yep!

Last Night of the Proms does that to me every time, and I still go back for more the very next year. What helps is the fact that we won at Cricket, Football AND Rugby today too!

That soprano was tasty, wasn't she?

I got told off by my wife for drooling ...again!

There should be more of it. British Nights. Had one on a cruise once - probably HAD to be out of UK Territorial waters othewise we'd have probably have been arrested for something - isn't there a law against patriotism in the UK now? I know a good few of us felt quite guilty waving our Union Jacks and sinding in praise of England. lol

Last Night of the Proms really gets you, doesn't it? I haven't watched it in a while but it always makes me stand up and wave the imaginary flag...
