i have 2 512mb sticks of corsair ddr 400 3200 when comp boots
up it says the ram is running at 128bit....duel mode.....then i put a 1 gig of ram in then it runs at single channel and says 64bit is this worse if its running at 64bit....i dont really understand the 128bit thing or 64bit....comp takes 4 gigmax

It's difficult to explain but i think you get 64 bit per channel. have you tried the 1 gig ram in one slot and a 512ram in the second slot or try two 1 gig rams. The link below may help.

Not that difficult to understand really. Each channel has 64 bits. When you have 2x512 installed, you are running in dual channel mode, which effectively doubles the bitrate to 128 bits. However to run in dual channel mode, you have to have matching pairs. Adding the 1GB stick means you no longer have sets of matching pairs, hence single channel mode is activated.
