I personally don't charge money for tarot readings, so please don't assume that all tarot readers charge just because some do. If someone comes to me seeking guidance, then I will not turn them down under any circumstances. I believe in karma...what goes around, comes around.
But on the flip side, I don't think that there is anything wrong with others charging money for tarot readings if it is their only source of income and/or the only thing they can do to make ends meet. We all have to make a living!
But, charging just isn't for me....

Tarot is a very complicated type of study cuz u have to study each card upright then reversed and each position has around 4 meanings that depend on the surrounding cards and the querent's question. It also involves numorology and calculations.
It took me 7 years to study it although u still something new everyday.
As for ur question, try reading tarot 5 sequent times for urself and u will start feeling how u r becoming tired; it consumes ur energy and even worse when u r reading for people, thus u would be getting THEIR negative energy.
Personally, i charge something really trivial ($1) cuz tarot is not my profession and i charge for 2 reasons:
1 tarot is like a public phone; u don't get a clear answer unless u pay something
2 i donate %20 of what i get to churches or beggars cuz my teacher warned me many times against keeping the money i get for myself... It's a karma thing

You know the revered Farrars devoted the good part of a chapter to explain this exact question... you see if you give free tarot readings, you will soon be swamped with cheap people who want you to do a reading for them. And it'll just suck the life out of you-especially when people get angry at you for declining to do a reading. Since tarot doesn't really count as working magic for someone, it is appropriate to charge someone for a real reading. Plus it wards off all those cheap people who want a free reading.

people who spend there time doing something when they could be working a regular job HAVE to eat .so they charge, they have to have a home.blankets, maybe a puppy.so they charge. i am an herbalist who Gives herbal remedy's to people for free, but i do it at night not in the day time when i work,if i did it full time i would charge are have to go live in the woods in a tent. is that what you want? people to starve and be wonderful kind starved to dead people in the woods.maybe they should not charge for anything, then go live under a bridge?maybe what you do ,you should stop charging for? try that sometime, be a kind wonderful hungry homeless person and see how it feels.my preacher deserves a salary.he is a doctor and minister.he went to years of college.so we might learn more.he runs the church.he does many things, what do you think he should do? do it for free? how would he feed his family?keep a roof over there heads? i wonder if theres a place a person can go to to take classes in common sense.looks like someone needs to take such a class.

I read tarot cards for free, its not my main job, but I do read cards. Some people read the cards for money because they give excellent advice, and they want to help people that seek help. And the other people that have no ability at all, and still charge outrageous fees, they are ridiculous.

I would think because that is what they dedicate their lives to. Where else would they get money to survive. Plus everything is expensive now adays from rent to food. I think that if tarot readers would get money from working elsewhere they would really have no time or they be too tired to even read their own family members card spreads.

If you are really interested in your tarot readings, you should invest in buying yourself a deck.
That way you can do a reading for yourself at any time and get to know what each card represents.
It'll be something you can have forever and wont need to be charged by anyone to read them.

I once answered a young'un that asked me such a question, "Look to the Rabbis." I said this because those religious men decided thousands of years it would sully a Rabbi's true religious, being, doing, and providing, to others, if they were depending on making money via these religious duties.
It has always worked well.
