I have a shaft drive now 1400 and I'm thinking of going to a belt driven but curious if i will gain or lose anything other then the jerky throttle.

The main difference between shaft-drive and chain driven bikes is unsprung weight. There is much talk of "Directness" and "Snatch", but having ridden both configurations equally over the past 15 years, I have to say I noticed neither.

You will find that clearly there is less maintenance with a shaft drive, but the handling of the machine will always be slightly worse on the back end. This is because of inertia: you want the rear suspension to react quickly to undulations or input from the rider, but a shaft drive weighs that much more that this reaction will come later. Upside down forks were introduced for the very same reason.

The only disadvantage I found with a shaft was the torque twist.
Chains need cleaning, lubrication, and periodic adjustment.
On belt drives, alignment is critical.
Chains and belts don't break because of rocks. Chains are better if you travel dirt roads.

There's one issue with shaft drive that most people overlook- it is bulkier than a chain or belt. This is more obvious now because of the trend toward wider tires which causes the bevel gear housing to protrude outwards.

Minuses: Belt drives are not able to handle as much power as a shaft or chain drive. Belts also need to be watched for wear and adjustment.

Pluses: Belt drive is easier to change gear ratios (change pully size). Belts make less noise than chains and do not need to be oiled.

Shaft drives are virtually maintenance free. With belt drive you have to keep an eye on the tension of the belt. Plus you you have to check it every now and then for tears or holes. Most people figure the wear out time for a Harley belt is about 80k miles. I have over 21k on mine and no signs of wear.
I went through this when I got off my Honda Goldwing and got on my Harley. I don't regret it.

Belt and chain drives are easy to work on and replace when necessary but require more maintenance, Shaft drive is virtually maintenance free except for the yearly oil change.

no reason to downgrade to a chain or belt that i can think of, keep the shaft, it won't break 300 miles from homebecause a rock hit it.
