I thought it was creative and the product of drugged out thinking, and the Monkee's now think so too. It was written by Jack Nicholson in one of his drugged out moods. It was some creative moments, but their strong desire was to separate themselves from the pop reputation, and it just proved they weren't much more than that. I admit to being a fan of theirs, and thought that clear thinking could have produced a better quality product.

I never saw it until one of the cable subscription channels ran it in the late 80s. Very strange indeed, but in a good way. There's nothing spoon fed to the viewer in this one. It helps quite a bit to know the background of The Monkees' struggles with their image, their fame, and each other. Put all that in context with the time it was made and what each person involved expected the movie to accomplish to see why it can be watched repeatedly and still always see something new. I don't expect to ever understand everything about it, but I do like it a lot.

the Monkees' desperately wanted to prove that they were more than just a television concoction. They had a good idea with the movie and for the time it was made it fit in with the Culture. It's certainly not a classic like the Beatles, A Hard day's night, which has stood up for over 40 years as a perfect example of a classic comedy.

I think they had a good idea but just too many drugs to make a really good movie.

Steve C is correct.
I saw it when it first came out, and I thought it was a pretty decent film. I saw it again about 2 years ago and I couldn't believe I sat through the whole movie the first time! It's OK I suppose, and it has some historical value.
Check out these funny clips of Mike Nesmith playing Frank Zappa, and Frank Zappa playing Mike Nesmith, this is hilarious!

It was great.
I was the right age to see it when it first cam out - but i didn't even hear about it till at least 15 years later.

Trust me, it would have helped the Monkeys careers a lot, if anyone saw the movie when it was made.

Yeah, it was druggy. The usual sort of thing Jack Nicholson was caught up with in 1968 (see The Trip).
