Well, if we didn't have grocery stores and there was nowhere to buy any food at all. I suppose I would become a vegetarian and grow my own food. There's no way I'd ever be able to kill an animal just to satisfy my hunger if there were veggies around.
I don't like fish either - unless its fish sticks (say that 3 times real fast). But, I don't think you can catch those fishing.

My man Edgar is actually allergic to fish (if ate). But sometimes i feel a distant second to his fishing for them.
And yes he really is going fishing because I have a very fish full diet as well as the rest of my family as well as his side.
So if you want to know if he can eat for life I'd say yes, so long as his partners keep trading or paying for his catch in beers and steaks.

Doesn't matter. If you give a man a rod, he's your friend for life. At least the next five minutes.
If he hates fish, maybe he's only turned on by rod: to which I say - to each his own.

Then sell the fishing rod, buy a guitar and play music on the sidewalk. Then you can use whatever money you earn to buy real food instead of yucky fish.

It's a puzzling statement, let's give a Tuareg in the middle of the Sahara a fishing rod and see what he makes of it. I bet he uses it as a riding crop for driving his camel. this statement is not derisory of the Tuareg but of the stupid philosophy that states the fishing rod quote.

Put something strong tasting over the fish to hide the taste. Like some curry sauce or something.

the version i heard:
if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day,
if you teach a man to fish, you feed him for life.
it's just a proverb that means that you need to let people do things by themelves, instead of doing it for them, because if they do it, they learn a skill and it stays with them.
sorta like homework, lol.
but u can teach him to catch chicken.
