Copper IUD insertion two months ago and have not stopped bleeding. I am to take 10mg of progesterone a day for 10 days. Why will this stop the bleeding and will this have any long term effects on my hormones?

You were put on progesterone becuase extended bleeding is often the result of a low hormone level. The medication will raise your level and stop your bleeding. Please note, this can take anywhere from 3 to 10 days.

Studies have not shown any long term effects resulting from taking progesterone to stop dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Long term effects are rare and occur only when therapy itself has been long term (years...not days or weeks).
