There are many different statues in Copenhagen, but the one who is most known abroad is probably "The little mermaid". It is supposed to illustrate H.C. Andersen's fairytale named likewise. It was a gift to town of Copenhagen, and was given by the brewer Carl Jacobsen, and created by Edvard Eriksen. It was placed on 'Langelinie' by the shore permantly the 23th of august 1913. The statue has several times been vandalised, and once even decapitated. It is a very famous tourist attraction. People arrive in busses, only to take pictures of it!

Which statue? Presumably you refer to the one which sits on a rock in Copenhagen Harbour in Churchill Park. This small and unimposing statue is a Copenhagen icon and a major tourist attraction. It was sculptured by Edward Eriksen using his wife Eline as the model and was unveiled on 23 August 1913. It was commissioned by Carl Jacobsen the son of the founder of Carlsberg. This surprisingly small statue is only 4'1" high. The name of this statue is "Den Lille Havfrue" (The Little Mermaid).

edit: The decapitated head was never found so a new one was cast.

Everyone is right with the Little Mermaid.

Mannekin Pis is in Brussels, Belgium. That statue is vandalized all the time too, just like the Little Mermaid.

Well, as everyone is saying: The Little Mermaid. Don't get too excited about it, though. It's really not that wonderful.
