There is a coin flip to determine who gets a bye. Then 1 plays 2 on Monday, the winner plays 3 on Tuesday.
I'm not sure about what happens if two of the three stand to make the playoffs. My guess is that season series would determine the division champion, and then the other two teams would play off for the wild-card. Otherwise, the winner of a coin-flip would get a free ticket to the division title, and that can't be right.
If two teams are tied for the division and both are headed for the playoffs, season series does determine the division winner. It happened to the Red Sox and Yankees a couple of years ago.

A two-game playoff. The teams are designated A, B, and C -- there are various ways this is accomplished, depending on how the paired head-to-head records sort out. The two games are then scheduled thusly:
Game 1: B at A
Game 2: C at A/B winner
C has the shortest path but needs to win a road game.
It is far from perfect, but about the best baseball can do to fit in a multigame tiebreaker with the postseason waiting to start (and television paying a lotta munny for that to happen). And it never yet has been needed.

Edit: here's a link to MLB.com explaining the three-way and four-way tie scenarios, how the teams are paired off for games and how it is set up. This is from 2003 but nothing has changed since. Rather dry and long reading, but if you really want to know...

As of now, I'm guessing the Cardinals would get the bye since they have the better head-to-head record against the other 2.
Of course, I've been wrong before.

I think taht the team that has the better record in head to head competition would be the winner. But the one game playoff would be in effect so, it's mathematical.
