Yup. Check expiration dates, forage around for the latest expiration date in the milk section and read the ingredients on everything but cookies.
This started when my husband was having thyroid tests and had to go totally sodium free for two weeks prior to the test. He had to have the test every year for three years, until he'd received the maximum radioactive iodine treatments he could have for his lifetime.
We've just kept up checking labels, as much out of habit as out of concern for a healthy diet.

I do. I have learned that lesson from colby cheese, foods in the Deli section of the grocers, and even yogurt.
Yes, I dig all the way back in the milk section and the bread section because the grocers put the ones ready to expire in the front.
I have stopped drinking milk per se, and now drink 8th Continent Soy milk because the expiration date is about 2 to 3 months from date of purchase.
Thanks for the question and as a reminder to all of us to be vigilant about this.

The last thing I want is nasty milk that didn't last in my fridge. I'll change refrigerator, if it won't keep the milk fresh, the least thing I can do is check the expiration dates on the food. Its better to let the stores send expired food back to the sellers than to have it go bad at my house.

You betcha, I want to make sure it is the freshest. Some stores do not have a high turnover, and things will expire more quickly. Reminds me last week I was in the store and a elderly (well older than me) lady was foraging through a display, like she was looking for something. So I asked her if I could help her with something. She was looking for pancake mix and she was trying to get at the boxes, way in the back.
She said it was so she could get the newest one, and the expiration date would be later. So I helped her find it. I don't go to that extreme. Mainly just on the dairy products.

Yeah, that's me.
I recently had the cream curdle in my morning coffee AFTER my first sip, and before the second....I had these little curds of milk fat floating all through my coffee. It freaked me out.
So when I washed out my coffee cup and poured a second cup (my son-in-law went without that morning!) I made sure to pour out the last of the coffee cream in that same container and to open up the reserve one.
Since then I always dig through all the creamer containers making sure that I pick the date that is farthest away from the date I buy it.

No I don't, now I really feel left out guys!
I just won't buy milk from a place that doesn't have doors on the refrigerated section.

Yes I am. I live a fair distance from the market so I don't go as often as most. I've made it a point to make sure I buy the freshest food I can get.

Yes, always have. It's a habit from when I worked at a supermarket for years while I went to college. Stock is rotated, oldest to the front. Daily.

I check the dates for milk, bread and packaged salads and get the freshest one I can.
