Most definitely but cannot find any web sites to confirm the fact - - - but several French names have made it into the list of Mexican Surnames - - - and in fact it is said that the word Mariachi is derived from French word for marriage...

http://www.mariachitierradelsol.com/history.html
"""Musicologists and folklorists have argued for years over the origin of the word "mariachi." The explanation that appears most frequently - especially on record jackets and in travel brochures - is that it is a variation of the French word "mariage," meaning wedding or marriage. In 1862, Napoleon III of France invaded Mexico and installed Maximillian as Emperor of Mexico from 1864 to 1867. It was during the French occupation of Mexico that these ensembles were often hired by the French, as many French soldiers married Mexican girls, to play at fiestas and weddings. But this explanation, always regarded as highly doubtful by linguists, was totally discredited recently when a use of the word was found that predated the time when the French arrived in Mexico. ""

But as for something more definitive I have to give books an edge over the Internet - - - the Internet is based on Popularity and the French Occupation of Mexico only gets air play when Cinco De Mayo rolls around and even most of that info is misinterpreted...

(Speaking of Cinco De Mayo - - -one of the French Generals as Le Bayonaise)

Peace...............
