I have a bad memory of this cult thriller classic...I guess it was made in the 60´s.

...you're thinking about the 1966 film, "It", which as you said, starred the late (and great) Roddy McDowell...

...the film was a contemporary take on the fantastically ancient and historical story of the Golem...

...and it is yet another great classic genre film on my DVD 'want' list, which has yet to see release!!!
