I'm interested in just fixing up a "portable" cistern pump consisting of a jet pump that I can carry around. Would it be too much strain to have this run for an hour to water some grass?

You can run a jet pump without a air tank, but make sure you have a float switch hooked up to the regulator so that if all the water is empty, you don't burn up your pump. As long as you have water running through the pump, then you can run it for hours, Jet pumps a durable. Float switches that you find on a submersible sump pump will work.

If you have a cistern that can hold up to a thousand gallons of water, it would be O.K. and, then the water would have to be replaced for the next day. Don't you think this would be an awful lot of trouble to go through or, isn't your well good enough to support the watering?

It may be better to have a shallow well with "Gray" water, for use on the lawn and veggies, a lot less trouble.

I lived near a lake and had a pump in it for the summer to water, worked out fine but, as I said, it was a lake. One hour of pumping can used anywhere from 600 to a thousand gallons of water, a lot more then one would think.

What you need is a "pool pump". They run continuously to circulate the water in swimming pools, sometimes for months. Once primed, they will pull water from a close water source, such as a cistern, and put out quite a bit of pressure. They wouldn't need a pressure tank to function. Many lake property owners suck water out of the lake with these to wate their lawns, saving wear and tear on the house pump.
