First of all, go to control panel, under audio check the right codec is selected for playback.
I have a USB record deck, when I plugged that in it made my codecs use USB for both and I need USB to record and Realtek to play.
Secondly there is this driver that is the most common one: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True
However, my motherboard is Nvidia based, so on my main PC I tend to use the Nforce drivers:
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
Then I needed this version for an Acer machine:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
Hope that helps, should do...

hi there, most of the p.c,s that have onboard audio use "realtek ac-97" audio and this can be downloaded from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/
just click on the link that says "ac-97 audio codecs",this will download the drivers and software that will succesfully give your p.c sound
once downloaded just click the downloaded file and follow the on screen instructions, and after restart your p.c as advised
upon restart you will see a blue realtek icon in the taskbar, right click this to go to sound manager and you can configure you sound to your personal taste, theres a graphic equalizer and also a option to save sound profiles if you have a particular sound style for a certian song or game
any problems let me know
good luck!

You need the AC97 Codecs. I had the exact same problem and getting those Codecs did the trick for me.
Get them here:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

use internet explorer and go to tools>windows update, then click the custom button and see if it finds a driver update for you
alternatively....right click on 'my computer' and go to properties then hardware tab then device manager and try updating the audio driver from there
