using xp pro,samsung p28 laptop,tried to fit new unit and power is there just no ability for it to read discs(not on my computer or device manager).

If this was a desktop, I'd ask you about cabling. Since it's a laptop, are you sure you have the right model? There may be crud in the socket the drive plugs into.

If it is not shown in the Device Manager, the leads may not be connected or pulled out of the socket. Check also the drive selection connection. Read the manual that came with the drive.

Sounds like the drivers haven't been installed and if so your computer wont recognise the drive, and it won't show in device manager or my computer
