I am 5 weeks pregnant and I went to the ER 3 days ago with cramping and bleeding( nopt major bleeding just when I wiped and it was pink/red). they ran tests HCG was 337 and did an Ultrasound which they didn't see anything(they said it was too soon to be able to see anything anyway)

I went back in for another blood test yesterday(Friday) to get HCG levels and they were 387.
Doctor was supposed to call me and talk to me before they left the office but no call , now I will have to wait till monday.

another tidbit that may make a difference, on friday morning I started progesterone suppositories. could that have made the second HCG level go up, or do you think I may have not miscarried yet? I am no longer bleeding but still have occational cramps some sharp.

Anyone know why this would be? Or if I am still pregnant?

TIA

I am very concerned about an ectopic pregnancy with your symptoms. The hcg level and the fact it did not double, the empty uterus when viewed by ultrasound and the pain are all indications. I feel like a jerk for posting this, I truly hope I am wrong. If the pain becomes worse or continues, you feel dizzy or faint, or have shoulder pain please return to the ER. I had the same symptoms as yours with my ectopic. I did not bleed heavily until after tube ruptured, before then I had red spotting, abdominal pain, and felt faint during the more painful cramps. They watched my hcg levels, they only slowly rose from 285 to 296 in two days and would then fall and when they did an ultrasound there was nothing in the uterus.

Feel free to email me- even if only to call me a di*k for scaring you.

I hope everything is ok.

Hi there,

I'm so sorry you're having a tough time with this. At 5 weeks, it's common for nothing to show on an ultrasound, so I'm not going to go there with that.

What concerns me is that your hCG levels didn't increase much in the 3 day span. Levels almost double every 48 hours or so in early pregnancy. It's not even so much the actual number, but that that number goes UP.

I could smack your doctor for not calling you Friday. Please try to get a hold of them as soon as you can Monday. I would want another blood test done to see if the levels go up a bit more aggressively this time around.

Don't assume anything...some women experience spotting and/or bleeding early on. Also, hCG levels are often lower until the baby can be seen on an ultrasound. So don't concern yourself with the actual number, but whether if that number is steadily rising.

Try to have another ultrasound when you hit 6 weeks and another blood test. Until then.... don't assume anything and try to stay calm.

Good luck Sweetie.

Your HCG should double every 48-72 hours with a normal pregnancy, but it is still possible to deliver a healthy baby with slow rising levels.

Ectopic is a posibility, but not very likely. However, if you have extreme pain you need to get back to the ER.

Since the level is still rising then as of Friday when the blood was drawn you were still pregnant. The progesterone they gave you should help save the pregnancy. Since the bleeding has stopped you have a pretty good chance of carrying this baby to term.

Your levals are where they are supposed to be and the bleeding that you are having is called uteren bleeding which is all perfectly fine. Some people mistake this for a miscarrage but i am trying to get pregnant and have went through IVF treatments enough that I have asked all these same questions.
