I said I was out of line for something and returned. They gave me a face that I should go to the end of line again. Did I break the rule or someone's?

Next time before you step out of the line, loudly ask the person standing behind you if they can hold your place in line while you go off for a quick errand. When they say yes then loudly thank them very much so that every one on line in that vicinity hears you were in line and that someone is going to let you back to the exact same place.

Then when you return go up to that same person and thank them for holding your place and smile to the people around you as you step back in line.
