The clownfish (as in "Nemo") is only tropical in the sense of temperatre - it's a saltwater species that needs to be in a marine tank, with marine salt to simulate seawater. (there's also a saltwater "clown goby")

There are also clown loaches and clown plecostomous that are tropicals, but they are freshwater fish, and both are somewhat sensitive to salt.

All tropical really refers to is the temperature of the water as being over 76oF - species that live blow this are referred to as coldwater. Whether or not there's salt in their water is a different matter entirely.

There are a few species (guppies, mollies) that are equally at home in freshwater and saltwater conditions, so if you want to keep a clownfish (the "Nemo" type) with a freshwater tropical, you would need to get one of these and acclimate it slowly to saltwater conditions (adding a little marine salt every few hours or dripping saltwater into their tank until the salinity reaches a specific gravity of 1.020-1.026), then adding the clownfish. For anyone who knows what the fish are, it's a real conversation starter!

Clown fish are tropical in the fact theat they need a heat source and should have the tank between 78 and 82 degrees. The fact you have to add salt to keep them alive means they are saltwater and therefore need to be kept with other salt species.. Such as damsels or tangs, or any other salt..
