I am shopping for a wireless router and wondering if a normal strength 54mbps signal will reach the attic from the ground floor, or if I will need one with a stronger signal, thanks

It depends on how large your house is and what your walls are made of, but it should do so quite easily. You would, of course, be best off placing your router in the middle of your house rather than on the ground floor.

If you can put the router near the middle of your house (near the center of the middle floor) you should have a good signal anywhere else in your house. And probably from a small area outside your house as well. If the attic is two floors above your ground floor, it should still work though not quite as well as if the router was central.

the signal from the wireless radio is designed for maximum horizontal range not vertical. the best thing to do would be to get a directional antennae and try to have the signal from the ground floor going to the desired location in the attic at a 45 degree angle.

It will work fore sure, but might not have good signal strength. but you can always get a wireless access point to put in the middle of computer and router you can find a decent one for 20-50 bucks.

Put the router in a central location. And put it high.
get the router and try it. You can always add a wireless repeater if the strength is not what you want. And you can go here afterwords if you still aren't getting results you want.
