For example, if I wanted to say "The four most common questions are why did he commit the crime, how did he commit the crime, and how did he know her?"

How would I correctly word that?

The four most common questions are: Where did he commit the crime; Why did he commit the crime; How did he commit the crime; How did he know her (or the victim). I'm guessing no 1 as u only gave 3.Hope this helps

The three most common questions are: Why did he commit the crime? How did he commit the crime? How did he know her?
You didn't offer a 4th so I used 3.

hmm I'm not exactly sure, you only provided three questions. This is how I would phrase it though:

The three most common questions are: how and why did he commit the crime, and how did he know her?

I would condense the two questions into one to prevent redundancy unless you are purposely repeating for an effect. I'm unsure of the punctuation within a sentence, but I would not use a question mark within a sentence.I'm not even sure if in this case it is proper to use one at the end.

you need a colon.

The four most common questions are: Why did he commit the crime?, How did he commit the crime?, and How did he know her?

A colon introduces a series.

Leave your quotation makes as they are if you mean it to be a quote. I wasn't sure if you needed them.

In _Alice in Wonderland_, Alice sees a white rabbit muttering to itself, "The Duchess! The Duchess! Oh my costly paws! Oh my fur and whiskers! She'll get me finished, as helpful as ferrets are ferrets!"
