Like most others say, check with local planning and/or building department. It varies with location. But you also need to know about easements and setbacks on your property. It could be 5', 10', 25'. And to get that info you need to see a plat. And to see the plat, you need to go to the one of several places. When doing a remodel, I have to go to the assessor's office in one county or the recorder's office in another. But perhaps the county engineer in your location. Perhaps you will get a lucky and the planning department will have a copy. If a relatively new subdivision, the developer will have a copy, or the builder.
Point is you will have to do some research, make same calls, and do I bit of running to know for sure you aren't in any setbacks or easements.

There is no national LAW/Standard, so your best bet would be connecting with your local agency that governs zoning and code enforcement.
Even ZERO lot line housing can vary in placement of the structure and the limit to a wall, etc.

I am sure every place is different, so you would have to contact the zoning board if you are doing the work yourself. A good contractor will know all the building codes or inquire about them before he starts.

usually any improvements must be 6 feet from the line, which i believe includes overhangs.
