Why are Americans answering this question? Did any of them read it? See the words Poll Tax. Child Support Agency, Minimum Working Wage? Do any of these apply to the USA?
And no, unless there is a radical change in their policies, I would not vote Conservative. The problem for the English voter is they do not have a lot of choice. New Labour are old Conservative so that leaves the Lib Dems, who along with all the minor parties, are unlikely to get into power. We in Scotland can vote for a party that really represents our interests and that is the SNP.

"Can anyone defend their policies and what achievements they made for the benefit of the people?"
I believe this was your actual question. I'm neither conservative nor liberal but I will try to answer this anyways.
True conservatives are not in control of this current administration yet the truth is that there are not any true policies that are of benefit to the people unless you are an elitest.
Politicians simply do a good job of teasing people with hope and then when elected their loyalities to big business, bankers, and the top 1% of the population start shining through.
So there are not any real achievements that have been made for the benefit of the people nor will there ever be unless a whole new approach to elections is taken and there are deep policy changes made to restrict big corporations, people with the most money, and their lobbiest from involvement with government.

You are quite correct, but consider the current situation.
The vast majority of first time purchasers are unable to buy a house, there are almost 10m people unemployed, the minimum wage has become the standard wage in the majority of jobs that are available, the education system is a disgrace, the Health Service is underfunded and highly skilled staff are unemployed, public transport is split between a multitude of companies causing a nightmare for the travelling public, there is no integrated transport system hence the congestion on the roads and crime is fast approaching the situation in America where children take pot shots at each other which usually results in a fatality.
I could go on but you and the others who subscribe to this site know the situation for yourselves, the politicians have lost their way and do they really care?

Your sounding like someone who votes for a political party 'because that's who my dad always voted for'.
(let me just say i'm not a tory supporter no more than labour or anyone else)
On the poll tax for example, that was years ago during maggie thatchers time and little relevance to the policies of today, it's not going to be brought back now.
I remember months and months strikes when i was a child under labour but that has no bearing on the party of today and virtually none of the current MP's are still there.
The CSA is a right bloody mess from day one and surely Labour have had enough time and money to sort it out, you can't just blame the tories after all this time.
Boom and bust? Are we not booming now and could we not bust still, especially after the problems over the last few weeks with the american markets?
You have to listen to the leaders and policies of all the parties TODAY, what they propose and ultimately, do you believe them?
Me? I think ALL the parties will promise the world, tell us what we want to hear but no deliver no matter who we put into power but will still vote because people died so we could put that cross in the little box.
I will vote at that time based on who i think is currently the best of a bad bunch and not on what they did 20 years ago.

Yea I will vote for Fred Thompson. America is not the same place as even when I was a kid in the 70's. People aren't held to the same high standards, patriotic or family loyalities are alien qualities. Drugs, drinking, materialism, and self entertainment are the new gods. Sex on every show, occult people as celebrities, gay marriage and gay priests inflicting their pedifile acts on young boys. Theres a bottom line a thinking person does not cross and we are under that line in America. I recall more civility than what we now have, and I will vote so my grand son can have some assemblence of saflely walking to school like I used to. In my way of thinking God will not hold his hand back on our country for the heidenous path we've taken.

Toko and Bruce J: This is the Politics & Government > Politics > Section, not the "UK" section. Looking back on the question, it could have been written by a lib in ANY english speaking country. All who use Yahoo Answers in english see questions from ALL English speaking countrys. Get a grip.
Read you history, facts and figures. Republican administrations have done a lot more for this country than Democratic ones. Democratic presidents are good for taking credit for things and promising things they do not have the power to do to get elected.
People say times were better when Clinton was president. This is true, but this was inherited from things done durring the Regan/Bush administrations. Clinton did a good job trying to screw it up. He also could have had Osama Bin Laden on a silver platter, (already a wanted terrorist in this country) but did nothing. He also gave nuclear technology to the North Koreans. Imagine how different the world might be if North Korea didn't have nuclear capability and if Bin Laden had been jailed and/or executed long before 9/11.
Democrats also want you to forget that all wars in the modern era (post 1900) except for the gulf wars were under Democratic administrations.
Wake Up America !!!

Good choice - voting for a payment would be illegal. Dems always want to be paid.
And speaking of taxes ... let's see when was the last time my taxes where raised ... Oh, I remember the famous speech .. "My fellow Americans .. I have worked harder than I've ever worked ...and I have no choice but to raise your taxes" .. Bill Clinton - after PROMISING not to raise taxes during campaign.
Now the Repubs ... Reagan lowered taxes, Bush lowered taxes ... Some of the best development years in American history during the Reagan years .. and Bush = took the country over in the recession that Clinton left it in .. Set all time record for new housing starts, record low unemployment. Dow avg. was what $9k at the start of his term ... set a record for first time over $10k .. today $13k.
Hope this helps.

One cannot excuse Labour or New Labour as it now calls itself. We still pay high Council Taxes ,The child support agencies still drop clangers, and the minimum wage still leaves the Employers enough rope to take advantage of the working man.

The tory big wigs have been getting uncomfortable with cameron,s lean to moderate policies of late to such an extent that only today he has had to come out and assure them that he is as tory as thatcher, that should be a chilling enough warning to those who may be contemplating giving them another chance. These people do not change, they merely put things another way, which, by his admission today is what the old etonian leader has been doing all along.
Please! don,t let this rabble back out of the bottle it took so long to get them into.

The choice is yours, but at least they ARE offering a referendum on the EU Constitution which is DEMOCRATIC and not trying to IMPOSE an undemocratic, corrupt Constitution upon us which will affect every corner/aspect of our life, and leave us with a caretaker government just implementing EU corrupt law! I cannot defend their policies no, (I don't vote Conservative/Labour) but then the same could be said about New Labour,or do you walk around with your eyes closed?
