what advantage is there to making graduated cylinders narrow and tall rather than short and wide?

If it is narrow and tall you will be able to see differences better, because a ml difference will show up bigger than on a shorter cylinder. The narrow and tall one will allow you to measure volume more accurately.

Because by making them narrow, relatively small changes in fluid volume can correspond to fairly large changes in the height of the fluid, allowing you to measure the volume of the fluid more precisely.

Hi. Accuracy. Putting a drop in a tub does not give you a good feel. But put it in a pipette and you will see a difference.
