Usually my connection is ok, but sometimes (maybe once every few weeks) it just disconnects suddenly.

If there is too much traffic, then I thought I would not have been able to log-on in the first place.

Make sure that no one is picking up the telephone while you are connected
If you have call waiting, be sure that you put a *70, in front of the dialup number. This stops call waiting for the duration of your time on line.
You have noise on your telephone line.
Your modem or cable(s) are bad.

Perform the following checks, to see if you can force a disconnection:
hit the modem lightly
wiggle the cable and wire connections.
If this does not pinpoint the problem, you can check your modem by borrowing some else's modem and see if it still happens.

There can be a number of reasons for this, but oftentimes Dial Up ISP will terminate a session after a prolonged connection. They will enforce this as the system capacity is becoming full.

use a dedicated phoneline for computer only
this should be a single purpose line only

start
control panel
internet options
connections:
check always dial my default

physical reasons:

1] frayed wires from outside pole
2] loose,frayed,corroded wires at house phonebox
3] frayed,loose,corroded wires in wall connector
4] loose wires on computer
5] inline noise,have phone company do a line sweep to check

you should contact BT as you might have a fault on your line, it doesn't hurt to ask them, if all is OK then you modem might be playing up or the traffic on the line.

One disadvantage of dial-up connection, if somebody is calling your phone, it will affect your connection, then it will cut and connects again..this is normal in dial-up...

because its dial up. you get what you pay for. dial up should be banned!

possibly you have call waiting (disable) r u using AOL?
