Veins

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vena_cavae
"The superior and inferior vena cava are collectively called the venae cavae. They are the veins that return de-oxygenated blood from the body into the heart. They both empty into the right atrium."

Veins. Vena cava originates from Sinus Venosus and this I believe is the sac in the lower part of the heart, which receives deox blood FROM different organs and other parts of the body through veins and venules. Since vena cava is the blood vessel connected sinus venosus, it must be a vein. Besides, vena -vein, it's pretty obvious.

They are veins. In fact, they are two of the largest veins in the body. As blood returns to the heart/lungs to be re-oxygenated and pumped back to the body, they collect in increasingly larger veins, until they reach the inferior (from the lower body) or superior (from the head and neck) vena cavae.

Because they carry blood to the heart they are veins. Another rule to remember is that almost always veins carry de-oxygenated blood...the sole exception being the pulmonary veins, which carry freshly oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart. I hope this helps you out!

Oh, also, though it is beyond the scope of this question, it is important to remember that veins are anatomically different from arteries, not just functionally different.
