I can tell that you took a lot of time and thought for this question.
Why don't you try going over to the not so free Iran with Sean Penn, and then come back and tell us what you think of their so called freedom.
And here's a news flash! (Don't tell anyone I told you this) Iran's a theocracy!

Wiki's right on this one.

the only person replying who has even the vaguest notion of the truth is piegopwr ,just above me.
I especially agree that it is not only Republicans but things would not and have never been much different under Democratic administrations.
We are on the whole a simplistic people and prefer to deal with dictators. One of our favourites was Saddam Hussein and others were Ho Chi Minh,Fidel Castro, Diem,Pinochet,Somoza,Noriega, the Sha etc etc
Our problem is that we somehow think we are special with a mission to the world and we always end up getting it wrong and creating disasters.
No wonder every time a world poll is taken the U.S. usually comes at the top of the list or near it as the country perceived to be most detrimental to world peace and stability.
BTW,Israel comes pretty damn close to most people's definition of a theocracy and I'm not sure the state of Utah isn't one.

What democracy in Iran are you talking about? Iran is not a democracy, it is a theocracy. Have you ever heard of the Grand Ayatollah? The Ayatollah hand picks who the candidates are. In Iran there is no separation of church and state, it's all one. The church makes the laws and the church leaders are not elected. You should research your questions a little more before you post something with a false premise.

Well to be honest Iran is not totally a democracy but it is not a horrible place either! I am Iranian and Iran is portrayed as being some kind of breeding ground for muslim extremists, when in reality take a look at Saudi Arabia.

If you mean the post WWII democracy Alan Dulles overthrew to install the Shah and SAVAK during the Eisenhower administration, Then I assume you also mean:
Pinochet in Chile (Nixon)
Nicaragua (Iran contra- Reagan)
Venezuela (W)
They don't hate democracy just liberal democracy. They prefer a brutal right wing dictatorship to a "communist" democracy.
And it's not just the republicans,to be fair. US foreign policy has always been biased against any outbreak of anti-corporate interest in the world.

Foreign policy is flexible. We support unelected leaders that have something we want or can help us in some way, and condemn elected ones that don't co-operate fully with the current pet project.
It has been like this since WWII but may not continue forever!

it is all a balance of power play. the us only influences the establishment of democracy and free markets, the politicians seldom like or are enamored with those who control a government years and years later.

Iran is an Islamic Theocratic Republic.
Seems to me liberals would be against a theocracy of any kind.

Can the left-wing loons sink any lower?
