The early Muslims waged war on Arabs who were considered idolators in order to convert them to Islam. Does anyone know what the beliefs were of those people before they were converted?

Ba'al and Ashteroth were still held in esteem by many of the Nomad Arabs.

They were polytheistic. They believed in many gods and had small idols made. Mecca was actually used to store the idols and treasures of the old religions. However, Mohammad led his army and took over mecca and the old religions died. Mecca then became a place for Muslims to flock to.

I've read that the Arabic people of the surrounding areas were all non-Palestinian Jews, including Mohammed himself. That explains that they share all common ancestors and basic beliefs with the Old Testament (Moses, Abraham, Isaac, you name it.)
This makes all the sadder the continuing misery and conflict between Jews and Arabs - they are literally one people!
