it depends on the style of music and sound you want to get. since you're just starting you definitely do not need a $1,500 Fender or Gibson. a Squier (by fender) Stratocaster or Telecaster would be great, as would a Epiphone (the squier equivalent with Gibson) SG, or whatever. pick a guitar that you like and want to play, but don't spend too much money! you can get a decent guitar to start out on under $200. It would be a good idea to go to your local music store, and see what they have. there are beginner packs that have everything you need to start playing, so that's helpful you don't know much about guitars already. and seriously, save your money, you don't need to spend even $500 right now, even including an amp. you'll probably want a car in another year or two...and you can always use some of that money for guitar lessons. I got a used, but very good quality Japanese Squier Strat and a 10 watt Orange solid state amp to start playing guitar. I love the little orange amp, so if you want to splurge on an amp I'd definitely recommend it...so you could get a $100 amp, and say, $300 guitar. there's also the little things like guitar picks, guitar strap, guitar case, new strings that you'll be spending money on periodically, too. good luck and have fun!

also try playing the guitar at a music store. a les paul is a great guitar, but it is kind of heavy. from what I've heard the daisy rock guitars are good, but play around and see what you like. the reviews at musiciansfriend.com are a great resource too. and if you're trying to emulate a certain sound, for example, fall out boy, then you'd want to get the same kind of guitar--like a Gibson (or Epiphone) SG. If you're emulating Nirvana, you might want a Fender jagmaster or something.

I recommend that you don't spend to much money. You can get something decent for less than $500. Go to a music store and try a Yamaha or Epiphone. They both make low cost quality guitars. Try them and make sure they are not to large for you. A dreadnought model guitar could be much too big and uncomfortable to play. You may also want to look at a Daisy Rock Girls guitar. Cost is $150 to $500. These have the advantage of being the right size. Stay away from the big name brands- they make the best guitars, but not in your price range. Their lower end guitars are not as good as the brands I mentioned.

get a mexican-made fender or a high-end epiphone (i prefer epiphone, but its all personal preference

even though you have the money to buy an expensive hih-end guitar, DON'T!!!

you dont need a really pro guitar like a gibson or something yet. and youre saving about a thousand dollars

just go to a music store, try a few guitars, and get the one you like best.

also, read reviews online and hear what the people at the shop have to say about the guitars before you buy it

Acoustic or electric?

$1500.00 should get any number of great axes.

Electric - seriously consider an American Telecaster.

Acoustic - consider Alvarez or Epiphone.
But no matter what brand, go for the 1 that feels the best for you. You have to go to someplace that has lots of brands and allows you to play them to determine the best fit.
Playability is the key factor.

electric or acoustic?

If it's electric...i'm partial to a Fender Stratocaster...

If it's acoustic....I like a Martin or an Ovation..

With all my respect, since your only 13 going on 14, make sure in your mind, your quite serious about playing, and not giving it up after a short time....Great guitars can be quite expensive...so, make sure you really want it...

Good Luck

You can't go past the Fender Stratocaster, if you're learning or a pro rock muso.
