When I was a little kid my parents spelled everything they didn't want me to know, so I started memorizing the letters they said in code, wrote them down, & then later I would look the words up in the dictionary. Pretty soon I had quite a spelling vocabulary.

When it is not known how to spell a word, look it up in the dictionary. Read the description of the word that is given in the dictionary, if it agrees with the sense of the sentence that is being read, then write down the word.
Having written the word once, write it down again a further six times. This method, although tedious, will impress it into the memory.
Many words in the English language have the same prefixes or suffixes, but these beginnings and endings often have different pronunciations. Other words are often spelt the same but have different meanings and pronunciations depending on the context that they used.
Examples are :-
bough, cough, dough, enough, hough, lough, plough, rough. Slough.
bough, pron. bow
cough, pron. coff
dough, pron. do
enough. pron. eenuff
hough, pron. huff or how.
lough, pron loch(Irish)
plough, pron. plow
rough, pron. ruff.
Slough, pron. Slow (the town).

The book Alpha to Omega explains the rules of spelling rather well and learning some word lists of by heart, by the way beware the dictionary as you can use years and years searching for a word and not find it because you can't spell it to find it.

We had spelling in school. Any time I asked my mom how to spell something she would say, "Look it up in the dictionary." And crossword puzzles are great for vocabulary AND spelling. There is no quick-fix besides spell check, but even that's not infallible if you don't use the correct form of the word such as to/too/two, etc.

Reading a great deal, so that you keep seeing the correct spelling in front of you and each time you see words their spelling is re-inforced.
If you have difficulty with specific words, try writing them correctly many, many times...then you'll get it into your thinking what is correct.
Some people do find spelling extremely hard and can find little spelling rhymes a help....like 'i before e, except after c'...etc.

It's good that you want to learn! I would say that the way that someone is taught to spell starts at home @ an early age. Then when you begin school your teacher teaches you the basics.... It's not easy to always spell everything correctly. good luck

Sounds helps - phonics so that you can "spell" the word slowly in your head through sounds. Shapes of words can sometimes help - ie shape of word bed.
If learning specific words, look, say, cover, say, write, check is a good method. Be sure to look at the word so that you have visual as well as phonetic clues! Hope this helps!!!
