An obstacle is something difficult that you need to face and deal with. Another expression is the word hurdle. Picture a horse in a competition. Just like the horse has to jump each hurdle to make it through a race, we have hurdles or obstacles that we need to face and get through or over in order to make it through our life as well. The hurdles at a horse jumping contest are of different sizes and heights just like ours hurdles can have different degrees of difficulty to deal with. We may not make it over them all perfectly just like some horses hit the rails when they jump over them but we need to still complete the race.

It means what challenges or difficulties have you faced in your life and then were able to get past them. This is usually on college applications and things like that. It's a way for you to show your resourcefulness, ability to persevere (keep going in the face of a difficult situation), etc. It could be something like a medical problem, learning disability, difficult childhood situation, a loss you suffered, anything. The point is usually to show how you overcame and succeeded despite this difficulty.
