Just wonder why most Americans are so Naive, that they can't see that money and world power drive the US. Also why is it so hard for the public to see that killing a few thousand people for a few billion dollars is actually easy for the US Government? I know some of you will say that we put our trust in our Government, but step back and really think about it. If you could do something so bad unhumanitary and have the perfect cover-up (Iraq) and get away with it would you? I don't want no Patriotic dumb answers only intelligent answers. No blaming any other Counrty this is about the USA home of Martial Law by 2008 Just remember if Bush instates Martial Law he does not have to leave the Office and will become another Dictator just like his families business partner HITLER.

The poor fellow who doesn't know the President can declare martial law is really naive. Do ppl not know that Bush now has control of the National Guard..once this branch of military was under control of the Governor of the state..no more.

Look what happened to law abiding citizens in New Orleans after katrina...out of state "law enforcement" officers unlawfully took arms..actually beat an 80 y/o woman who brandished an unloaded handgun.

It they want to know about FEMA..google Rex 84.. the mechanism for martial law is already in place, just in case citizens actually try to enforce the Constitution.

It is possible that martial law rill be in force as you say, but too many do not believe it possible in the "land of the free"

Naive Americans

Wow. Did you just Godwin your own question?

The president does have the power to declare martial law, which would essentially suspend most of how the government now functions. However, if the need were not *overwhelmingly obvious,* it would never happen.

First, the military has to back that up. They are sworn to follow his orders, but they also swear to defend the Constitution "against all enemies, foreign and domestic." Guess which one will win out?

Second, most Americans won't stand for it. You can order people around, but that doesn't mean they'll obey. In a situation like your hypothetical, a lot of people will not meekly do as they're told. Modern-day America is not much like 1930's Germany.

People are basically looking to be led...The Federal Government, Dictators, The King, you know some guy to take care of all the problems...to be responsible. If you think about it only a lunatic would think he could run the free world..and they do...only a lunatic would send millions to get a job that pays 400,000 a year. We want a job a home and all the rest of it. So as long as you provide it we buy it. No one will be a Dictator that might upset the idea of a "Democratic Society" it's much easier to sell democracy. The government dose not run the country it's run by people who pay for the government. It is not in their interest to let Bush stay in power at the expense of the Myth of Democracy. No Hitler no Bush just business as usual,It's what they pay for. The don't care who is President, They bought him back when he wanted to be Senator or Governor or what ever,Republican Democrat what ever. Get over your very Naive concept of world politics...You are a surf, you have been all along so are we all

I don't think American Soldiers are naive. I would point out that your entire question is based on hearsay and the opinion of one British soldier. Surely this British guy did not discuss Iraq with every American Soldier there? Trust me, there are plenty of American Soldiers who don't toe the government line. I'm one, and clearly the only reason that this region of the world matters is oil, so yes that is an underlying reason. Without oil, the Middle East would be about as important strategically as sub-saharan Africa. The war was fought for bogus reasons, but not to get oil as is commonly stated. Rather it was to instill democracy in the heart of a very undemocratic area. The idea is that poor disaffected people in the Middle East who suffer under authoritarian regimes are ideal recruits for terrorists. So you install democratic governments accountable to the people and Al Qaeda loses recruits. (Whether you think that would work in reality is another argument, but that is the reason I think the war was fought). But you would have never convinced the US to go to war in Iraq over installing democracy so instead we got this story about WMDs and an Iraq-9/11 connection and so forth.

It is not naive so much as it is lack of information. People who are raising families and working two jobs do not have a lot of time to dissect complex problems. They have to put their trust in someone to do the job for them. Unfortunately, the ones they have chosen are greedy for money and power. Add in the big corps , the special interests, and the partisan cigar puffers and you get an unholy stew!

Naive?

Why does every situation have to come down to black and white, right and wrong, yes and no?

Is the war about money? Sure it is.
Is the war about oil? Sure it is.
Is the war about protecting our interests? Sure it is.
Is the war about terrorism? Sure it is.
Is the war about capitalism? Sure it is.
Is the war about the military industrial complex? Sure it is.
Is the war about WMD's? Sure it is.
Is the war too complex to explain with one stupid theory?

Sure it is!!!!!!!

Quite frankly, I don't want to give up my way of life just because someone else says I should.

Leave the war to the "deciders"

You're the one that needs to take a step back and think about it.

Money and power don't really drive anything. Anyone who knows anything about human beings knows that sex drives everything, including the desire to acquire money and power.

How bizarre is that, Bush went to war with Iraq, and soldiers are signing up in droves just to get laid! And the terrorists drove airplanes into the WTC just to get laid! And they killed 3,000 people in the building whose only reason to go to work was to get laid!

If Bush does declare Martial Law, I can assure you it'll be about sex.

'Freedom to Facism'.

Watch this movie. It's about a guy that asks the I.R.S. if there is a law requiring American citizens to pay federal income tax. He uncovers some truths about the Federal Reserve that chilled me to the bone.
