Here's the facts:
Carbon is a chemical element, atomic number 6 on the
periodic chart, and can combine with itself or other elements
in many different ways. Carbon can occur in more than one
physical form, for example graphite and diamond are both
forms of elementary carbon. Another is charcoal, and soot
or lamp black are mostly carbon (in the amorphous, or
