My friend just recieved an underage drinking ticket by the La Crosse police last weekend. She does not have to appear in court unless she pleads not guilty. The fine is $220, if she show up to court and pleads guilty will she be able to get it reduced being that this is her first offense?

the fines are usually set so appearing in court wont do anything except waste her time and the courts. tell her to pay it and don't drink again until shes legal!!!

I would fight it. I recommend that she get an attorney and plead not guilty.

I would request a jury trial.

She just might win. Even if she loses I think that it is good practice to challenge accusations against you. She will learn a great deal about our justice system that will be very valuable to her later in life.

Since the penalty is relatively small if she loses I would say she could consider a public defender if she does not have the money for an attorney.
