Christianity rose from the traditions and teachings passed on by the followers of Jesus in the time following his death. Although the structure of the organized Church has changed dramatically over the years, the basic values of the faith remain the same. Don't confuse the infastructure of modern Christianity with the Christian faith. In my mind, they are two very separate things.
