There's a series of books called Hacking Exposed that have some good tips on computer security.

You do not need to know how 'hackers' work - in fact, most 'hackers' have no idea how hacking works (most of them are idiot 'script kiddies' i.e. American school kids, who have no idea what they are doing .. they simpley run hacking tools & software provided or stolen from others..)

What you need to know is how to protect yourself ..

First you need to protect your link to the Internet. These days it's almost impossible to guarantee you won't be hacked, SO the next best thing you can do is become 'invisible'.

This means having a DSL modem box with a built in Firewall that you can set to 'stealth mode' (no reply to 'ping' etc). Don't forget to change the default password and NEVER allow the DSL box to be 'managed' from the Internet (set it so you can only manage it by plugging in a physical cable connection).

This has the added advantage that your kids CAN NOT 'turn off' the Firewall so they can run some stupid game (and thus reveal your Internet Banking details to the world).

Now if your are REALLY CLEVER you can use a Wireless Router. If not (like me) then you should not use wireless .. it's much harder to secure a wireless link than to protect physical cables running to each of your PC's (it's rather obvious when some-one runs a cable out your front door into the street but it is NOT obvious when some-one in the street picks up wireless transmissions of your banking details).

Next, EVERY PC in your house should have Zone Alarm (a Firewall with outgoing protection) installed... this is because a Trojan / virus CAN still get through from the web (for example, via an infected email attachment etc) or physically inserted via an infected USB stick etc. ... and having Zone Alarm on each PC not only warns you when the Trojan tries to 'call home' with your Bank details but (more vital) protects all your other PC's from the one that gets infected.

If at all possible, do not use any type of 'Instant Messaging' (locate and uninstall the MS version) or 'Peer to Peer' downloading s/w .. if the kids MUST have this stuff, put it on a separate PC on it's own 'sub-net' (so that PC can't easily get to any of your other PC's)

Finally, avoid using Microsoft s/w as much as possible .. the hackers MAINLY focus on MS Outlook, MSIE etc. Use Yahoo / Gmail / MSN or other Web mail and Firefox instead and you will avoid 99% of the problems.

Of course, a good anti-virus (such as AVG) is also a good idea, but MOST VITAL is NEVER EVER click on 'links' in eMials and NEVER EVER double click to 'run' an attachment in an eMail (ALWAYS 'save to disk' first ... and then inspect the file to discover what it's REAL file type is ...
"nude.jpg .exe" is NOT a JPG image of a nude .. it's an executable virus installer ...

It is far better is never to 'catch' a virus in the first place than to rely on virus protection s/w ..
